TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Texas man was charged Thursday in connection with the deaths of 23 donkeys who had been crammed into a livestock trailer, officials said.|
The donkeys, among 44 of the animals crowded into the trailer for shipment to Florida, trampled one another to death, officials said.
The dead animals were discovered when the driver pulled into an agriculture station in Suwannee County.
Christopher D. Youngblood, 30, of Ben Wheeler, Texas, was being held in the county jail, authorities said. Ben Wheeler is in Van Zandt County in East Texas.
Youngblood is being charged with 23 counts of felony animal abuse and a count of driving with a suspended license, the Department of Agriculture said.
It was not immediately known whether Youngblood had obtained an attorney.
